Life is a journey, make it an amazing one

Understanding our real selves fosters personal growth, authentic relationships, and informed decisions, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life journey. I like to do this using the beauty and power of nature.

Who I am

Why Solitude felt right for me

A few years ago, I made the decision to embark on a 21-day solo journey in Dartmoor, one of the last remaining “wild” areas in the UK. Despite Dartmoor being a popular destination for hikers and ramblers, I was determined to find those quiet and untouched spaces that abound for those willing to seek them out.

During this period, my aim was to completely detach from any form of human contact, intentionally avoiding encounters with fellow hikers, campers, and everyday dog walkers. I yearned for true solitude and seclusion.

The experience turned out to be extraordinary, not only prompting me to confront various questions I had about myself but also raising queries that had quietly lingered throughout my life, ones that I had never previously ventured to answer. In an attempt to capture the passage of time spent in isolation, and subsequent ‘journeys’, I chronicled my experiences, both the exhilarating highs and the challenging lows, and started to write about aspects of our connection to nature, that will help us, physically, mentally and spiritually on our journey through life.

When planning a two-week solitude trip in nature, it's essential to pack carefully to ensure comfort, safety, and self-sufficiency. Here's a comprehensive packing list to guide you:

Shelter and Sleeping

  • Tent: A two-person tent is recommended for solo trips to accommodate your gear inside. I prefer to sleep under a 'poncho' or tarp only - a tent can be heavy to carry...
  • Sleeping Bag: Ensure it's rated for the lowest temperatures expected during your trip..
  • Pillow: Choose between an inflatable or a regular pillow based on preference.

Cooking and Food

  • Camp Stove and Fuel: Check if camp stoves are allowed at your location. I basically don't use an open fire, and very often use my trips away to fast, only having an intake of water and coffee!.
  • Cooking Supplies: Include pots, pans, utensils, and a can opener.
  • Food and Snacks: Plan meals in advance; consider non-perishable items.
  • Rubbish Bags: For packing out all waste. Bottom line is: leave nothing behind but footprints and memories..

Clothing

  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Quick-drying and layered clothing, including a rain jacket and warm layers.
  • Hiking Boots or Shoes: Comfortable and durable for long walks.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: For sun protection.
  • Insect Repellent and Sunscreen: Essential for protection against bugs and sunburn.

Safety and Navigation

  • First Aid Kit: Comprehensive and tailored to your needs.
  • GPS Device or Map and Compass: For navigation and safety
  • Emergency Plan: Have a plan for emergencies, including communication devices.

Miscellaneous

  • Water Filtration System: To ensure access to safe drinking water.
  • Entertainment: Books, journal, or a musical instrument for downtime.
  • Lighting: Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Multi-tool or Knife: Useful for various tasks.

Being well-prepared will enhance your solitude experience, allowing you to enjoy nature safely and comfortably.
