Embark on a Journey of Solitude: Rejuvenate Your Mind and Soul
Find Humility in Vastness
In the embrace of nature, as you stand beneath towering trees or gaze upon boundless oceans, you will inevitably feel humble. Amid the endless expanse of space that challenges comprehension, there’s a realisation: you are but a speck, “a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” to quote Carl Sagan. I felt this ‘mote of dust’ when rowing at night on the Indian Ocean and being in utter awe of the night sky. Within this vastness, a unique serenity arises. The exterior enormity is dwarfed by the rich inner universe that thrives within you. The true essence of existence isn’t about the universe outside, but the universe within.
Discover Your Hidden Strength
Amidst nature, you become a colossal presence. While you might tower over tiny insects, you also stand distinct as the only sentient entity in a vast expanse. You tread on untouched sand, scale massive mountains, yet the feeling is not of dominance. It is a profound sense of responsibility. Alone with nature, you forge an alliance; nature shifts from being a distant entity to an intimate confidant.
Cherish the Power of Silence
The initial unsettling quiet is transformative. Stripped of external voices, you are left with introspection. Your mind transitions from ceaseless chatter to a silent observer, amplifying your senses and honing your intuition. The first time I went on solitude it took me days to quieten the incessant ‘chatter’ going on inside my mind! But, with patience, my mind started to quieten to allow me to soak in fully (my being and my presence) the nature world around me.
Embrace Accountability
In this realm of solitude, you are the sole architect of your fate. Mistakes are yours alone. Yet, in every error, there is growth. For example, setting my ‘basha’ or tarpaulin to protect me from the elements, in completely the wrong place. Having set myself in my little camp and bedding down for the night, I started to hear the wind pick up. With that wind came the creaking of several trees around me, at times, very loud and somewhat disturbing sounds! In the morning, I looked around and saw where massive trees had fallen in the past, and recognised I had to leave that site so as not to be squashed sometime in the future! The focus shifted from problem causation to solution. The journey is less about dwelling on past errors and more about forging ahead.
Trust Your Instincts
Without external influences, every decision is a mirror reflecting your inner compass. Alone in nature, choices are uncompromised, risks are measured, and faith in oneself is paramount. Every challenge faced alone fortifies your judgment, revealing its strengths and frailties.
Shed Vulnerabilities
In solitude, the only judge of you is you. Feelings of self-consciousness dissipate. Alone, there is a potent realisation that your place in the universe is self-determined. This journey of solitude fosters self-acceptance and diminishes external validation.
Savour True Freedom
When you eventually merge back into the bustling world, the transition feels profound. It is not just a return to civilisation; it is a transition from a solitary rendezvous with self. The solitude journey amplifies a fundamental truth: the essence of freedom lies in owning your choices, cherishing them regardless of their outcome.
Embarking on a solitary venture in nature is not merely a getaway; it is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and empowerment. Dive into this experience and emerge rejuvenated, both mentally and spiritually. I have been learning this for a few years now, and every trip into nature gives me more insights and more growth!
